CFFC’s Position on the Alameda Utility Scale Solar Project

While Open Roads Renewables has decided not to pursue the project, Citizens for Fauquier County (CFFC) believes it is important to share its views on the Alameda utility-scale solar facility.
We agree with the Planning Commission’s previous conclusion that the project does not comply with the county’s comprehensive plan and provisions of the solar ordinance. More specifically, the project is at odds with the county’s objectives of farmland preservation, retaining its rural character and protecting historic resources -- three objectives that are completely in line with CFFC’s mission. And even though there were some potentially desirable aspects to the project including the continued use of the land for a sheep operation and the intention to utilize a permanent conservation easement, these and other positives of the project were not enough to overcome its inconsistency with the comprehensive plan. CFFC has always been a staunch advocate for the county’s comprehensive plan.
We applaud the good work of the Planning Commission and county staff for thoroughly evaluating the project. And we commend Open Roads for working with the community and citizens groups and their responsiveness to expressed concerns.
We would encourage the county to take a closer look at how solar power could be implemented in the county without sacrificing our already diminishing stock of valuable farmland. CFFC would welcome the opportunity to work with county officials on this challenge.
With respect and appreciation,
